The students will create their own picture dictionary of the new vocabulary words they learned. They will use their observations and notes they took from the previous two lessons. Each dictionary will be individualized. The children will include the words that they learned. This dictionary can be part of their Science Notebook. I will also have the children go back to the work they did for Lesson 1 and see if they can use some of this new vocabulary correctly to describe their rocks. I am listing words I would like to see in their dictionaries. These words and their meanings will be up on the Science Word Wall. You can find these words and many others at www.enchantedlearning.com
.
Materials:

  • science note book
  • crayons/colored pencils
  • words and definitions from their notes

Procedure:
1. Using their notes and observations children will create picture dictionary.
2. They will use their science notebooks.
3. They will turn and talk and discuss their definitions for the vocabulary words.
4. They will place their vocabulary words in alphabetical order.
5. They will create their dictionary by labeling the top of each page with the letters of the alphabet.
6. This dictionary will be a living document. They will be revisiting it and adding to it as we continue this unit of study-UNIT 1 EARTH MATERIALS WHAT MATERIALS MAKE UP THE EARTH GRADE 2
